Very few producers, particularly within the Madeira wine industry, have undergone such a dramatic transformation as Barbeito. Transitioning from a bulk wine supplier to a leading producer in the Madeira wine region, despite strong competition at the time, is a significant achievement.
This transformation began in 1991 when Ricardo Freitas joined the family business. Together with their Japanese partners, the Kinoshita family, they made the decision to establish Barbeito as one of the most important producers of Madeira wines.
Another important change took place at Barbeito in 1991, when wine production became the responsibility of a family member for the first time. Two years after he joined the company, Ricardo carried out his first harvest without external supervision, thus paving the way for a team of people united by the same motto: to produce quality wines with their own style.
